My Literary Christmas List

Hey! Sorry I’ve been less active on here again. AP Chemistry is to blame. It sucks. Like, 2/5 stars. (So basically I’m miserable.) Instead of focusing on depressing things like chemistry, let’s look at some books I hope will be 5 stars. Today I’ll be going over what I’m calling “My Literary Christmas List”. Basically, this is just a list of books I’m hoping to receive for Christmas. I know this is a bit early to be thinking about Christmas already, but my family has been begging me for present ideas, so I decided to share the list I made with you guys too. Without further ado, let’s get into it!

The School for Good and Evil by Soman Chainani

One of my friends loves this series and has been begging me to read it. She always gives great book recommendations so I’m really excited to start this series. However, I don’t really know much about the actual book, but it sounds like it takes place in some sort of boarding school and basically any book with that setting is guaranteed to be awesome. (Think of one that isn’t awesome. I dare you.) Plus, apparently it’s a movie on Netflix now so I have to read the books before I can watch that.

Imogen, Obviously by Becky Albertalli

This books sounds so unbelievably cute. It follows Imogen, a high school girl who’s beginning to question her sexuality. Her friend groups sounds really cute and I’ve heard great things about Becky Albertalli so I’m excited to finally read one of her books. I don’t really know the details of like the plot of this book, but the cover looks adorable and I’ve heard nothing but good things about it so I think it’s worth giving a shot.

The Grace Year by Kim Liggett

Last year in English class, there was a unit where everyone had to read and present about a dystopian novel of their choice. Several girl presented on this book and it sounded pretty cool. From what I understand, in The Grace Year, girls are sent into the woods for their sixteenth year to prepare for marriage. However, not all of them return. No one really knows what happens during the grace year because it’s forbidden to talk about. I love a good dystopian and the basis of this book sounds pretty sick so I think it’ll be a fun read.

Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber

I don’t know a ton about this book, but basically it follows a girl named Evangeline who strikes a deal with the Prince of Hearts to stop the wedding of the love of her life. That concept sounds really cool. Plus I got one of Stephanie Garber’s other books, Caraval, for my birthday last year and I really loved it. Speaking of which I still need to read the rest of the Caraval series but that’s due to my inability to commit to finishing series, not the quality of the books lol. (And yes, I know this book and several others on this list are the beginning of series and I really don’t need to start any more, but like I can’t help myself! They all sound so cool!)

The Blonde Identity by Ally Carter

No matter the subject, this book would be on this list. Ally Carter is one of my all-time favorite authors due to her Gallagher Girls series, which is simply stunning. So when I found out that this book is also about spies—let’s just say I was sold. (For those of you who don’t know, Gallagher Girls is set at a boarding school that trains teen girls to become spies.) The Blonde Identity is about a woman who wakes up with amnesia and is being chased down because her twin sister is a spy. Does that sound sick or what? Plus there’s a romantic element and everyone knows spies are like ten times hotter than normal people. That’s just math.

We Set the Dark on Fire by Taylor Kay Mejia

This book’s another dystopian with a feminist message. I’ve seen it on Bookstagram a lot and heard a lot of good things about it. In this story, women are trained for one of two roles—to run their husband’s household or to raise his children. This book sounds super sick and also the cover is gorgeous, so yeah. I obviously need it.

The Castle School (for Troubled Girls) by Alyssa Sheinmel

Next up on the list, we have another fictional boarding school. I told you. They’re guaranteed to be awesome! The main character, Moira is sent to the Castle School, which promises to help teen girls who have been through trauma. Moira is sure the doctors who run the school are something and when she discovers another Castle School nearby for boys, her suspicions only grow. In addition to the sick setting and premise, I also really like Alyssa Sheinmel books. She’s never disappointed me and one of her other books, A Danger to Herself and Others is a favorite of mine.

Lovely War by Julie Berry

This book is a love story… narrated by the god of love, Aphrodite. How sick does that sound? Tbh I don’t know much more about it than that, but like, what more do you need? That sounds epic. I think it’s historical fiction and it sounds really emotional. Basically, I’ve just heard a ton of good things about this book and now I really want to read it.

This is Not the Jess Show by Anna Carey

As someone who loves to make fun of the ridiculousness that is reality television, this book caught my eye immediately. Basically, it follows a teenager named Jess who slowly discovers that her whole life is just designed to entertain others. However, Jess also realizes that the real world might not be a place she wants to return to. I think the concept of this book sounds pretty cool, plus I really like the cover. (Whoever came up with the phrase “don’t judge a book by it’s cover” must have a hideous bookshelf.)

City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

This is another book I don’t actually know that much about. However, I think I’m the only. Like, the only person ever lol. Seemingly everyone has read The Mortal Instruments series, so I’m excited to stop being out of the loop. One of friends (the same one that recommended The School for Good and Evil) has read this series and she told me she thought I’d really like it so I really want to read it and see what I think.
